Patch Tuesday Isn't a Strategy: Risk-Based Patching for Small Teams

Most MSP and IT teams still treat patching like a calendar event.

Second Tuesday arrives. Someone herds updates. A few machines reboot overnight. Compliance is "fine" until a client asks for proof — or a CVE open for weeks finally gets exploited.

Vendors across RMM are loud about autonomous patching and risk prioritisation right now. That direction is right. What's missing for lean teams is the practical bar: what does "done" mean for patching — before you buy more automation?

Stop measuring activity. Measure exposure.

Patch Tuesday is a vendor release cycle. It is not your risk model.

A useful patch programme answers four questions every week:

  1. What is still open that matters?
  2. What is approved to install, and in which window?
  3. What failed — and who owns the retry?
  4. What can we show the client without translating a spreadsheet?

If you cannot answer those from one place, you do not have a patch strategy. You have hope.

A simple risk order for small teams

You do not need a full vulnerability platform on day one. You do need rings and rules:

  • Critical / actively exploited first — shrink the open window fast
  • Pilot ring before broad rollout — catch breakages early
  • Maintenance windows per client — not "whenever the tech remembers"
  • Exceptions with an expiry date — permanent exclusions become silence

This is risk-based patching at MSP scale: fewer heroics, clearer ownership, reports that survive a QBR.

Package it as a service, not a chore

Clients rarely care which Tuesday Microsoft shipped. They care whether you can say, calmly: "Here's compliance this month, here's what we're remediating, here's the window."

That sentence is how patching becomes margin — not just maintenance.
